In less than six months of the release of the gaming-oriented Black Shark 2, popular smartphone maker Xiaomi is here with the Black Shark 2 Pro. Let’s get to the main highlight of the Xiaomi Black 2 Pro. As in, the mighty, powerful and recently unveiled SoC from Qualcomm is put at work here. Yes, the Snapdragon 855+ chipset which here employs a liquid-cooled plate and tube for efficient thermal management. Aiding the chipset is a massive 12GB of RAM. With that said, we have a choice of a faster UFS 3.0 128 or 256 gigs of internal storage memory. And before you rejoice, there is no MicroSD card slot here, so there’s that.
The AMOLED panel in the Black Shark 2 Pro is identical to the pre-refreshed model. However, Xiaomi claims to have reduced the touch latency from 43.5 ms to 34.7 ms on this new Pro model. As for the specifics, the AMOLED is of the FHD+ variety (1080 x 2340 pixels) and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. With that said, for biometric authentication, a fingerprint scanner lives under the AMOLED screen.
Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro Camera
Xiaomi has played safe and retained the same dual-camera system for the front and rear sensors as the previous model. As in, we have a primary 48MP + 12MP sensor combination. Upfront there’s a 20MP selfie cam. Both rear and forward-facing cameras onboard the Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro are able to record at a resolution of up to 4K @ 60fps and Full HD @ 30fps respectively.
Connectivity, battery power, and Android OS
Connectivity-wise, the Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro features dual-SIM and dual-Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac. As expected Bluetooth 5.0 LE is onboard along with GPS for navigation and location services. As the Black Shark 2 Pro is a gaming smartphone, we expected an audio jack, but unfortunately, that’s not the case here.
Now coming to the battery, the Black Shark 2 Pro disappoints with its 4000mAh power unit. We expected at least a 4500mAh battery as this is a gaming smartphone. However, to make up for this, Xiaomi has equipped 27W fast battery charging, which is great.
On the software side of things, the Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro runs on Android 9 Pie out of the box.
Availability, pricing, and color options
Pre-orders have already begun today for the Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro at the Black Shark online store. It will be available for purchase starting August 2 in China. The gaming phone will set you back CNY 2,999 ($435) and CY 3,499 ($ 508) for the base and top models respectively. It comes in Blue, Silver, Orange, Purple and Black paint jobs. Speaking of paint jobs, there are RGB LEDs at the back which look great.
