If you are a tech enthusiast, you must have used, seen or at least heard of Ubuntu Touch. I have been following it since it was first ported to Nexus 4 months ago and experienced it lately on my Galaxy S3. Though I am a hardcore Android fan, I must confess this new OS for smartphones has something magnetic about it.
Ubuntu Touch feels fresh in look and UI and promises a great experience. We had heard that they have been working on releasing a smartphone with Ubuntu Touch and now they have released the pictures and specs on the device on their official site. The new phone, dubbed asย Ubuntu Edge, has been announced finally!
Ubuntu Edge has an impressively sleek design that houses a 4.5″ display but what sounded pleasant to me was the dual boot factor. It means you’ll be able to switch between the native Ubuntu Touch and Android while booting the device. Now that is something every user would love to have. The whopping 128GB of storage is another enticer. Here are detailed specifications of the device:
- Dual boot Ubuntu mobile OS and Android
- Fully integrated Ubuntu desktop PC when docked
- Fastest multi-core CPU, 4GB RAM, 128GB storage
- 4.5inch 1,280 x 720 HD sapphire crystal display
- 8mp low-light rear camera, 2mp front camera
- Dual-LTE, dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4, NFC
- GPS, accelerometer, gyro, proximity sensor, compass, barometer
- Stereo speakers with HD audio, dual-mic recording, Active Noise Cancellation
- MHL connector, 3.5mm jack
- Silicon-anode Li-Ion battery
- 64 x 9 x 124mm
However, the specs mentioned above is not final and subject to change. There are certain things that have not been finalized yet. Canonical, the manufacturer of Ubuntu Edge, is reported searching for a good CPU for the device. We do not have any information about the capacity of the battery that’ll be used in it.
Canonical has now been raising funds to start the manufacturing 40,000 units ofย Ubuntu Edge in the beginning. While I write this sentence, they have already raisedย $981,124 of their total goal ofย $32,000,000. So the contribution is still on and will come to an end on August 31st. If you contributeย today, you’ll be able to get the device just forย $600 which otherwise will cost youย $830.
Well, we do not know what will Ubuntu Edge be like when it comes out by the scheduled date, that is May 2014 but from the info, we have now, it really sounds a good smartphone with pretty good features and awesome specs. If you do not wish to miss it, just hit the link and reserve your unit of Edge.
