Tecno released another smartphone named Tecno Spark 3 a couple of months ago. It’s not an OEM many in the west or even in the east know about. But in the markets that it exists, you’re better off knowing about them if you want a good bang for your buck. Tecno Spark 3

Tecno Spark 3 is an ultra-budget smartphone launched in Kenya where Tecno mainly operates in. The company is trying to replicate in Kenya what Xiaomi did in India but at a much smaller price point.

Design

Most of the features and design choices on this phone are simply lifted off of other smartphones. But every smartphone has something or the other from some other smartphone these days. And for the price, I feel like complaining would be more like whining.

The display on the front has an iPhone X like notch, plastic back with a shiny gloss finish, and a thick bottom chin. It tries to look like the iPhone X but ends up looking like the Poco F1 instead, another smartphone trying to look like the iPhone.

There’s a 3.5 mm headphone jack at the bottom and a micro USB charging port alongside a single speaker grill at the bottom edge. On the left side you get the dual sim slot and expandable storage slot while on the right, you get the volume rocker and power button placed accordingly to closer where your thumb and first finger naturally rest on the phone.

For the price of a children’s toy, the Tecno Spark 3 gives you a dual camera set up with a powerful LED flash. These are aligned vertically along the left side of the back. Tecno takes inspiration from Huawei in the placement of their logo and branding with a vertical alignment under the camera module. The fingerprint sensor is also on the back exactly where you’d expect.

Specs

It’s a dual-SIM smartphone and has two Nano-SIM slots both of which support 4G and VoLTE. Storage is expandable thanks to the dedicated microSD card slot. The display on the front is a 6.2-inch HD+ IPS LCD display with a resolution of 720 pixels by 1520 pixels. The Tecno Spark 3 wallpapers attached below are of nearly the same resolution. The aspect ratio of the display, and thus the wallpapers is 19.5:9.

Under the display sits the either a Quad-core MediaTek MT6580 CPU processor or a Quad-core MediaTek Helio A22. Which variant you get will depend on where you’re buying it. There is 1GB or 2GB of RAM with 16GB or 32GB of internal storage. Storage is expandable up to 256GB via a microSD card. If the specs sound like they’re from 2015, keep in mind the device’s starting price is the equivalent of ~₹565 or ~$6.95. You can buy shirts that are more expensive.

The battery is a respectable 3500mAh and it does not support any kind of fast charging.

Software

The device ships with Android 8.1 Oreo Go Edition since that’s the latest Android Go version available. The hardware clearly is not quite capable of running a full-blown version of Android with 1GB of RAM. The 2GB RAM variants do ship with Android 9.0 Pie. It’s the full Android experience, no lightweight Go stuff.

Camera

The dual rear camera set up on the back consists of a 13MP rear camera with f/1.8 aperture, a 2MP camera, and an LED flash. On the front, you get an 8MP camera with LED flash and support for “AI” Face Unlock. That is, the standard face-unlock you get on most Android phones.
