Redmi Y3

As the name suggests, this is the third generation from the Redmi Y series geared towards young people who love their selfies. Xiaomieven markets the device as a “Super Selfie” camera smartphone. The device ships with Android 9.0 out of the box.

Design

The Redmi Y3 is quite a looker especially when you consider the price tag. Although, admittedly that design has become quite generic these days with almost every device looking the same. It has a nice gradient finish, like every other smartphone in this range or almost any range. The glossy back is only interrupted by a protruding camera module along with a fingerprint sensor that slightly sinks in.

Flipping it over you get the now normal thin side bezels, a tiny waterdrop notch at the forehead of a giant 6-inch screen and a sizeable chin at the bottom. The Redmi Y3 has a splash-proof nano-coating. The power and volume buttons are located on the right side and there’s a micro USB port at the bottom. On the left is the SIM slot which accepts two nano-SIMs and a microSD card. A 3.5mm headphone jack is also present at the top.

Specs

The 6-inch IPS LCD panel has a resolution of 720 pixels by 1520 pixels which is definitely not ideal, especially for a display this large. Considering the price though, you can’t really complain although I would have preferred a smaller display instead, making the pixel distribution more compact.

As it stands, the display has a pixel per inch count of 269 and a screen-to-body ratio of ~81.5%. Smartphones with no notches manage better than that. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

Inside we have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 SoC with the Adreno506 GPU accompanying the CPU. The Redmi Y3 comes in two configurations with either 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage or 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The battery in a non-removable 4000mAh Li-Po one and supports fast charging at 10W.

Camera

A 12 MP, f2.2 sensor along with a 2MP depth sensor together create the rear camera module. There is an LED flash to keep the camera module some company. For selfies, the Redmi Y3 relies on a 32 MP, f2.2 shooter.
