For users in the USA, where Chinese competition is next to nill, the Google Pixel 3A seems like a good deal. For $400, it gives you the Snapdragon 670 and the best camera. But outside the US, there are competitors like the Meizu 16S with flagship level hardware. At least you can download Meizu 16S stock wallpapers that we have, regardless of where you live.

Meizu 16S

The Meizu 16S is made of the premium Gorilla Glass phone with a top of the line SoC and it sells for just about $440. That’s significantly less than the OnePlus 7 Pro and only slightly more than the base version of the Pixel 3A. For the extra $40 though, you get a significantly better processor, a much better, modern design, and a lot more RAM and storage to work with.

Design

The Meizu 16S is the company’s flagship device with flagship specs and their best design. Thin bezels, a bottom chin, and a notch have all become so regular. But the Meizu 16S maintains some sanity by creating a more uniform bezel distribution.

So the top and bottom have the same thickness and both the sides have the same thickness. The bezels are so small it almost looks like a phone with a full-screen front. In fact, the 16S’ bezels are almost as thin as the iPhone XS’s supposedly non-existent bezels.

There’s a dual camera setup on the back aligned vertically to the left. The Meizu logo sits slightly above the center. There’s not rear fingerprint scanner because the device has one built under the display. There’s no 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom along with the charging port but there is a USB Type C charging port. The sim tray is on the left while the power and volume buttons are on the right.

The back of the phone is made of shiny glass. The phone has curved sides that make it easier to hold in the hand. Look out for fingerprints though.

Specs

The front features a huge 6.2-inch IPS LCD capacitive touch screen display with a resolution of 1080 pixels by 2232 pixels. This results in a pixel per inch count of 400 and an impressive ~87.2% screen-to-body ratio. The aspect ratio is 18.5:9.

Under the display hides the Qualcomm SDM855 Snapdragon 855 Octa-core CPU with Adreno 640 GPU. This is supported with 4GB or GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. There’s also a variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. There are two more variants with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage or 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

All of that set up is powered by a large 4000 mAh battery which also supports 18W fast charging.

Camera

The super slim bezel on the front houses a 20 MP f/2.2 selfie shooter which supports video recording up to 1080p @30fps. The rear cameras on the back consist of a 48 MP f/1.7 sensor with PDAF and OIS support. This is the Sony sensor, however, which is superior to the 48MP Samsung sensor used on many other phones like the Vivo V15 Pro.

The secondary camera is a 20MP telephoto lens which provides up to 3X optical zoom. The rear cameras support video recording up to 2160p at 30fps, and panorama.

Software

The device runs Android 9.0 Pie out of the box with Flyme OS 7.3 running on top. For most non-Chinese users, the software might be frustrating to use.
