After weeks of teasing, Huawei has finally announced the Huawei Nova 4 and the company may have just given you a reason to not buy the Huawei P20 Pro. The most defining feature of the device is a circular 4.5mm wide hole cut-out for the selfie camera. It seems we’re almost over the notch that has taken 2018 by storm. 2019 may very well be the year of display holes instead. Samsung announced the Galaxy A8s with a similar display hole a week ago, beating Huawei to the punch. The Huawei Nova 4 might not have made it to the market yet but we already have the stock wallpapers from the device right here.

The notch has many haters, there is no denying that including a past me. However, some companies like Oppo have shown that notches can look fine if done right. I’m not yet sure how I feel about display holes though since they do look cool, and more futuristic. In practical usage though, they do seem to take up more space since the display area between the hole and the device’s edges is pretty much unusable. You can’t have any icons there. We’ll probably just have to wait and see when devices with these display holes do make it into the hands of users.

Huawei Nova 4 Camera

Huawei announced the device in China a couple of days ago. Its rear panel is extremely reminiscent of the P20 Pro thanks to its triple-camera array. This camera setup contains Sony’s new 48 MP IMX586 sensor with f/1.8 aperture. It is accompanied by a 16-megapixel 117-degree ultra-wide angle camera with f/2.2 aperture and a 2-megapixel depth sensor with f/2.4 aperture. Another variant of the Nova 4 comes with a 20 MP primary sensor instead of the 48 MP sensor.

There’s, of course, an LED flash on the rear as well. The company is touting EIS, 4K video support, AI beauty, 3D Qmoji, PDAF, and contrast focus on the rear camera. The selfie camera hole-punched into the display on the front is a 25 MP selfie shooter with f/2.0 aperture and EIS.

Huawei Nova 4 Specs

The Huawei Nova 4 runs on Huawei’s own HiSilicon Kirin 970 SoC which features four Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.36GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. This is the latest and greatest chipset from Huawei in 2018. The device is clearly not meant to be cheap and yet it is, compared to other Huawei devices that sport the same chipset.

The SoC is paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. This is expandable via a microSD card up to 512GB. The display is a 6.4-inch full-HD+ (1080×2310 pixels) display with a 19.25:9 aspect ratio. It supports 96 percent NTSC color gamut. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS/ A-GPS, USB Type-C (v2.0), and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Huawei hasn’t skimped on any sensors and the Nova 4 contains the full array of sensors you’d expect from an Android device such as an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, digital compass, gyroscope, proximity sensor, etc. The device has a fingerprint sensor on the back and also supports face unlock. EMUI 9.0 runs on top of Android 9.0 Pie, powered by a 3750mAh battery.

Huawei Nova 4 Price

The 48 MP variant of the device can be pre-ordered for CNY 3,399 (~₹35,300) while the 20 MP variant is available at CNY 3,099 (~₹32,200). Pre-orders can be made on Huawei’s Vmall e-commerce site. The devices go on sale official on December 27 in Black, Blue, Red and White colors.
