At an event today in Shenzen, China, Xiaomi announced the successor to MIUI 9,ย alongside the launch of the Mi 8, Mi 8 Explorer Edition, and the Mi 8 SE. According to an official MIUI forum post, Xiaomi will release a closed beta of MIUI 10 China Developer ROM for select smartphones starting June 1. MIUI 9 was announced back in July 2017 and the global version was launched in November. We can expect a similar timeline for the MIUI 10 Global ROM. That is, it will still be quite some time before your Xiaomi device receives the MIUI 10 update, if it does. Apart from the features and changes, MIUI 10 brings some new stock wallpapers and you don’t have to wait for an update to get your hands on those.
Which devices will receive the MIUI 10 update?
Currently, a closed MIUI 10 beta is available only to developers. The first batch of Xiaomi devices to receive the update will be theย Mi 8, Mi MIX 2S, Mi MIX 2, Mi MIX, Mi 6X, Mi 6, Mi 5, Mi Note 2, Redmi S2 and Redmi Note 5. A public beta will be available for these devices later in June.
The second batch of devices will not receive a closed beta, however, and will directly receive a public beta. This batch includesย includes Mi Note 3, Mi 5X, Mi 5c, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus,Mi 4, Mi 4c, Mi 4S, Mi Max 2, Mi Max, Redmi 5, Redmi 5A, Redmi 5 Plus, Redmi 4, Redmi 4A, Redmi 4X, Redmi 3S/Redmi 3X, Redmi Pro, Redmi Note 5A, Redmi Note 4 Qualcomm/Redmi Note 4X, Redmi Note 4 MTK, and Redmi Note 3 Qualcomm.
MIUI 10 Features
Starting with one of the most impressive feats of MIUI 10, AI-powered portrait effects. Xiaomi claims MIUI 10 usersย will be able to take Bokeh depth-of-field shots without requiring a dual camera setup. Portrait-style modes have been available on several devices from Huawei, The Google Pixel 2 and even the iPhone X. However, the only time this has been done using a single lens is with the front facing selfie cameras. Well, except the Pixel 2.
So essentially, MIUI 10’s portrait shots using a single sensor is something only the Pixel smartphones from Google have been doing until now. AI will also be used to determine a user’s app usage patterns thus helping them launch apps faster. The Chinese manufacturer calls this AI Preload, and it works also with native UI functions, not only apps. Similar features have been implemented on various other smartphones by a number of manufacturers already. It will remain to be seen how much of a performance difference this makes on devices getting updated to MIUI 10.
Another major feature which has been in the headlines is the new recents screen in MIUI 10. The new layout, the company claims,ย maximizes screen space, supports full-screen gestures, lets users swipe to delete tasks, etc. The new menu is designed to take advantage of the taller screens on smartphones these days with vertical scrolling. For those unaware, previous MIUI versions have had an iOS-like horizontally scrolling recents screen. Long-pressing an item on the recents screens gives users more options, such as locking it or shutting it down.
Furthermore, MIUI 10 users will be able to directly controlย Mi Ecosystem devices without the need for another app. A new car modeย optimizes the layout on the userโs device for better navigation while driving. New voice commands are also available for answering a call, reply to a text message, and change the route.
