Many apps are now slowly but surely adopting the Dark Mode. While some like WhatsApp had a love-hate relationship with it, others (like Instagram) were quick to introduce the same without much fuss. However, with Chrome, things were different. Google introduced the same feature a long time back, yet it never completely incorporated the dark mode. Although Chrome’s UI very well respected it, the same couldn’t be said with the websites. However, with the recent update to Chrome’s stable build for Android, things have changed, and for the better. You could now easily darken websites on Chrome with just a toggle.
There is one more thing to keep in mind. The method to bring out dark mode has also been now changed. That needs to be looked upon as well. This is because unless you would be able to enable dark mode, you can’t really test the darken websites feature of Chrome. With that said, here are the required instructions for both. How to test Chrome’s Darken Website functionality
The steps to enable dark mode and test out the Chrome’s darken websites feature, you’ll have to deal with flags. For the uninitiated, these flags allow you to test experimental features on any Chrome build. But being experimental in nature, there might be some stability issues once you enable any of these flags. Although the chances are rare, if that happens, just reset these flags to their default state.
Moreover, both these flags will only work if you’re running the latest Chrome v80. The said version is now available on the Play Store. So if you haven’t yet updated the browser, do so right away and follow the below instructions to try out Chrome’s darken websites feature.
Steps to follow
- Open the Chrome browser on your Android device.
- Type in chrome://flags in the browser’s Omni box (i.e. address bar).
- Next, enter dark in the flags search bar. You’ll now get two flags having this keyword:
- Force Dark Mode for Web Contents
- Darken Websites checkbox in themes setting
- Although the name of these flags speaks for itself, yet those who are still guessing, here is what these flags do. The first one will automatically render and apply the dark mode to all the web content and Chrome’s own UI. The second one is what this guide is all about. This will bring about a Darken Website toggle in Chrome.
- So tap on the Default keyword, select Enabled from the list. Chrome will now notify you to restart the browser. Tap on the Relaunch option that pops up at the bottom menu. Do so for both the flags.

Try out the Darken Websites Feature
Although you could now see the darken websites UI have been applied across the Chrome browser, the same can’t be said about websites. But fret not. Now that you have enabled the required Chrome flag, you could manually test out the darken website functionality, Here is what needs to be done.
- Tap on the overflow icon situated at the top right and head over to Settings.
- Scroll to the Basics section and tap on Themes.
- You’ll now see the Darken Websites checkbox right below the System Default. The same will also be visible under the Dark option (tap on it and you’ll see that feature).
