The patent troll between Apple Inc. and the Korean manufacturer Samsung has just taken an interesting twist as the iPad-maker loses the copyright infringement case against the latter in an UK court. Sticking to an earlier ruling, the panel of judges said that Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 did not copy the design of Apple’s iPad as its was “not as cool”. The decision could end the patent fight relating to tablet design between the two major tech companies across Europe.
Reuters reports Darren Smyth partner at EIP saying, “I expect this will be the end of the line. An appeal to the Supreme Court is in principle possible but there has been no indication so far that Apple plan such an appeal”.
The other side of the story is even more interesting than the decision in the favor of Samsung. The American tech giant has been instructed to run an advertisement on its official website and some respected newspapers apologizing publicly for the damage done to its opponent’s credit by the patent infringement appeal.
Welcoming the UK court judgement, a Samsung spokesperson said, “We continue to believe that Apple was not the first to design a tablet with a rectangular shape and rounded corners”.
