Lollipop is making its way to several devices other than the Nexus or Moto series smartphones. Certain variants of the LG G3 have already received the updated officially. But what if you’re already rooted or running a custom ROM, you can’t or I would say, you won’t get into the hassle of reverting back to stock completely and doing it all over again. So now is where we get in, we will guide you to Install Lollipop on LG G3 running a rooted or custom ROM and root it again on the Lollipop.
The G3 was launched in May 2014 and came with Android 4.4.2 KitKat out-of-the-box. It runs on a powerful 2.5 GHz Quad-core Krait 400 processing unit with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, supports an Adreno 330 GPU for an excellent gaming experience, and a 13 MP high-res camera with dual-LED for vibrant photographs. G3 also presents some unique features like Dual Window, Guest Mode, and Smart Code, etc.
Having such an outstanding device in your hand and running Lollipop on it, isn’t enough, you need it to be rooted to play with the inside. The first thing to be done is to have bumped TWRP installed on your G3, then flash the stock Lollipop ROM provided by sooti at XDA-Developers forums and eventually root it with SuperSU. We shall guide you through the complete process, so let us have it started.
Warning!
This guide involves installing Lollipop on LG G3 D855 unofficially and rooting it, which is a reversible yet risky process if done incorrectly. Be sure of what you’re doing and proceed only then. DroidViews or any of its community members shall not be held liable for any damage that occurs to your G3 before, during or after this process.

I have a LG G3 D855(Updated to latest Stock Android 6.0m with TWRP and Rooted), after that update all USB options in phone ist lost. PC not reconize phone. Can i flash this lollipop ZIP from TWRP? thanks and sorry for my english.
Though I’m very familar with rooting and customizing the original SGS and Nexus 7, I’m confused now. According to the texts above you need root to be able to install TWRP (which makes perfect sense) but you need TWRP to install root. Please clarify.
No problem, I found a youtube clip to get the root.
Great!! There’s a new method available now.
Yes, you have to tap the install button in TWRP recovery (on phone).
I have a new LG G3 D855(Updated to latest Stock Android 5.0), what’s the best way to root this?
Install TWRP and follow the rooting steps mentioned above.
Hi @DJBhardwaj:disqus Thank you for this, I will try to install TWRP and let you know of the result.
Yes and you can follow up our guide: https://www.droidviews.com/root-lg-g3-using-one-click-root-tool/
I wrote this guide assuming that users already have bumped TWRP recovery.
How can I root my device if I don’t have TWRP yet? And I have Stock 5.0 installed
Hi @DJBhardwaj:disqus I’ve read in XDA that before installing TWRP I need to root my device? Is this true?
I am sorry, is not that happened but it is repeated three times the same
I can not erase
Just make sure you have Bumped TWRP installed, and then flash the SuperSU zip with it.
Hi DJ I want to re flash my phone with lollipop that you sent me the link below.
Previously when I did the upgrade many of my apps and Information disappeared.
Is there a way I can update to lollipop and keep all my apps, settings and information especially emails and notes? Or reload a backup!
I’m quite new to all this so will need a bit of a step by step read to do it.
Thank you so much for the help previously
Hey @petrotheodoulou:disqus
I see you want to preserve all your data after the upgrade. If your device is still not rooted, I would recommend you to wait for the OTA update notification to reach you officially. That’s the safest way.
Morning, unfortunately it is rooted that’s why I’m installing the update manually, otherwise I believe the OTA upgrade won’t do any good to my rooted phone. Should I just make a list of my apps and reinstall them after the upgrade? Is there a way to reload older emails and notes I have taken. I noticed during my last attempt, it would show my notes but once I go into them it would be blank.
Maybe will just back up everything to my pic and take it from there.
Thank you for your timely reply.
Now there are several ways to preserve your data on the G3 after the manual update. Try and backup most of your content the online services. Like Gmail and all its related mail are on the server and not on your phone, so removing them off the device won’t create any difference. Which app are you using to take notes? Music, videos, pictures and other files on the other hand could be backed up manually by connecting the phone to the PC. Make sure contacts are already synced to your Google account, you wouldn’t need to back them up ever again. SMS could be backed up using this very good app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore
I’m using the standard quickmemo+ on my phone. Majority of my apps vanished including Skype viber instagram, fb, mobogenie, etc! I suppose it’s because they are not Google Apps? Or the versions are not compatible with lollipop?
Those apps could be downloaded and setup again. You don’t have to worry yourself about it. You would just have to visit the Play Store again and download them as usual.
Hey there, I rooted my previous 4.4.2 kit kat with purpledrake and updated my g3 to lollipop recently and supersu says that I have to manually reroot as there are no su binary installed. Where should I start?
Follow the rooting instructions again. In short, you need to flash the SuperSU file again.
Hi Guys i just used the above process to install lollipop! thanks for this it worked like a charm.
I want to know what happens if i restored my last back up that was done before the upgrade to get my apps and settings back, will it effect anything?
One more big up for the good work!!!! You are incredible!!!
Glad to hear that. Nothing will be affected at all, you can restore at anytime you want. Just make sure to wipe everything using the recovery before restoration process.
Thank you for the quick response.
Ok Ive messed a few things up and did a restore through TWRP which loaded kit kat 4.4.2 back and all my info and data has been restored as it was previously.
I take it i have to do the whole process again to get lollipop back.
Thats not the issue here, i am having major problems with my Network signal, it is dropping continuously every second.
When the phone started up it was working just fine, but now the signal is problematic and it keeps asking a few times to enter the sim card password, as the current one is incorrect for some reason or other.
How do i correct this problem? Is there a sim card setting or anything? the phone does not stay connected on to the network long enough for me to even receive an sms. it literally drops every few seconds
Have i completely messed my phone up or is there a solution here?
I assume you’re getting the signal drop issue after restore, am I right?
Just go ahead and flash back the KitKat radio too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784501
Yeah thats right, wow it blows my mind how you know whats the problems and am extremely grateful to know there are people that can help.
Which one do i load, im using a D855 international version in South Africa connected to Vodacom, if that helps anything.
Provide me a screenshot of Settings > About phone > Software information. So that i can take a look at the corresponding firmware version.

Phew, the G3 is quite a work. Download this: https://mega.co.nz/#!61QBVS5B!pa2xdGyeWAJKyAazkz9O8qc5b9hJOpxX5kaU_aFdjq4
No worries, that’s what we do here 🙂
Thank you so much, it worked and life has returned to normal.
Your work does not go unnoticed, keep it up.
You are magnificent.
Hopefully ill attempt to try install lollipop 5 again soon. Only problem was that half my apps vanished as well as settings and very important notes and that’s why I did a restore of my back up, and downgraded to Kitkat 4.4.2.
Thank you so much for your patience and help.
You are welcome, we expect users like you too, who can come up with their queries patiently. If you want the latest Lollipop KDZ for your G3, go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/leak-lollipop-5-0-android-l-d85519h00-t2934345.
Thanks again @petrotheodoulou:disqus. Hope to see you soon 🙂
I’ve done it all, installed both the lollipop and the superSU 2.37 and this is what I see:
Scrn shot 1: “root check” app says the phone is rooted
Scrn shot 2: Super SU app says it ain’t. And all the other apps as well. That’s really sucks.
help plz
Try flashing this via recovery: http://download.chainfire.eu/695/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.45.zip
It will work.
Is possible to root the official ROM stock with Android 5.0? Thanks
Yes, my friend. First of all install TWRP on your G3 variant: https://www.droidviews.com/install-twrp-recovery-on-lg-g3-all-variants-using-bump/
Then, use the Rooting steps from the above guide.
How to install TWRP on stock lollipop?
I have linked the guide in the reply above.
The Link is ok, but you have to root first to install TWRP. All methods from this link are for KitKat. No Method for Stock Lollipop.
As the things go now, that is probably the only way to get root. However you can try some methods given here: https://www.droidviews.com/root-lg-g3-using-one-click-root-tool/
Hi i updated to 5.0 using the LG G3 update center. Is is possible to root if i skip the first step , which is downloading the LG_G3_D855_Stock_20C_Bumped_Fixed.
The method involves flashing SuperSU using TWRP recovery, so it won’t work for your as your phone has the stock recovery. Try a method given here: https://www.droidviews.com/root-lg-g3-using-one-click-root-tool/
