Install Android L Developer Preview on Nexus 4

This year’s Google I/O event bought Android’s most updated innovation to the public. What is it? “Android L”! and I am sure you’ve definitely heard of it. This version of Android was made available to the public as a developer preview, being limited only to the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 2013, for which we have already covered a guide to install Android L Developer Preview on Nexus 5 & 7. The Android L Developer Preview holds drastic improvements in terms of both performance and design, but should this only be limited to a few Nexus devices? What about the Nexus 4 which holds a terrific hardware as that of Nexus 5. So today we’re getting lucky.

After days of hard work XDA member sykopompos with the help of a few others have bought the Android L Developer Preview to the Nexus 4, as an early beta. Mind that this is an unofficial port and not supported at all by Google. It contains every bit of the developer preview posted for the Nexus 5 and 7 plus it is rooted using Koush’s superuser app. The beta releases are taking over at a decent pace, have it personally used and operated, I can conclude it to be a daily-driver for users with basic needs.

Apart from that, I experienced one or two Force Closes at the setup, which vanishes forever by dismissing. Prerequisites

• Charge your Nexus 4 to at least 60% of battery
• Install proper USB drivers: Click here
• Backup your device completely, this includes your storage, SMS, contacts etc.
• TWRP recovery Installed. You can do so by following this guide.

Install Android L Developer Preview on Nexus 4

1. Download the latest updated beta: Click here
2. Don’t worry, no GApps or other addons are needed at all.
3. Connect your Nexus 4 to the PC via USB cable.
4. Transfer the downloaded zip file to a suitable location on the device storage. It is preferred to put it in the root of the storage for an ease.
5. Disconnect the device and power it off.
6. Press the Volume Down and Power buttons altogether until you see the bootloader screen.
7. Press the Volume keys until you see Recovery Mode on the screen and press the Power button to select and boot into it.
8. You will be on the main screen of TWRP recovery.

   • Cache
9. Go back to the main screen and tap on Install
10. Browse and select the transferred ROM zip file and slide the button at the bottom to start the flashing process.
11. The file is pretty big compared to other ROMs you have flashed. It will take a decent amount of time, like about 5 mins.
12. Once completed, tap on Reboot System.

The Nexus 4 will begin the booting process which can take as long as 5-10 minutes, so be patient. You can then set up and use the fantastic and updated Android L Developer Preview on your Nexus 4.
