One of the main benefits of Apple is the Find My Network feature. Almost every Apple product can have its last known location tracked with it. You can set up an Apple AirTag to monitor anything else, and you can quickly check where your iPhone, Apple Watch, or AirPods Pro is on a map—often in real-time.
However, unlike Apple products like Macs and iPads, which you can factory reset in order to sell or recycle, AirTags are more complicated because they lack buttons and a touchscreen. In this guide, we will tell you how to reset your AirTag.
2 Ways To Reset Your AirTag
Are you trying to reset your AirTag but don’t know where to start? As Apple customers, it’s crucial to know how to reset an AirTag whether you’re trying to solve connectivity problems, reselling it to someone else, reassigning the AirTag to a different item, or just starting over. We have two effective ways to reset your AirTag easily.
Using the Find My app
Resetting your AirTag is an easy process if you have a compatible Apple device close at hand and it is logged in with the same Apple ID as the AirTag you want to reset.
If your device cannot directly access the AirTag you wish to reset, follow these steps to remove the tracking device from your Apple ID without factory resetting it.
- Check that the AirTag you wish to reset has a working battery installed and is within the Bluetooth range of your device.
- Launch the Find My app.
- Go to the Items tab if the program doesn’t open.
- From the list, choose the AirTag that has to be reset.
- Select Remove Item.
- Tap “Remove” again.
Note: You can only finish these steps from an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch, according to Apple Support. Resetting an AirTag cannot be done via the macOS or the iCloud.com interface.
In addition to unpairing the AirTag from your Apple ID, this process resets the tracker to factory settings if it is close by and turns on. Use the instructions below if you bought a used AirTag that its previous owner didn’t correctly reset or if you deleted an AirTag from your account while it wasn’t in close proximity. The previous Apple ID will be removed with this process.

Using the AirTag Itself
You can also factory reset your AirTag with just the AirTag, but it requires more steps and takes longer. An AirTag cannot be paired with a different Apple ID until it is disconnected from the associated Apple ID.
- You can access the AirTag’s battery compartment by applying pressure and turning the stainless steel battery cover counterclockwise.
- Remove the battery by unscrewing the lid.
- Remove the battery.
- Apply pressure to the battery till it makes a sound.
- Repeat it four times after the sound stops. Then, remove the battery, replace it, and press down until the sound plays again.
- A unique noise will play on the sixth time to indicate that the AirTag is prepared for pairing.
- To replace the battery cover, align its tabs with the slots on the AirTag. Press firmly, and turn in a clockwise direction until it stops rotating.
Now that the AirTag has been deleted from its old Apple ID, it is prepared for re-installation on a fresh account. You can guarantee easy renewal of the AirTag and get rid of the potential issue.
An Android Perspective
Though Android fans often feel curious of the Apple environment because of features like AirTags and the Find My network, there are other options available. You can use Android’s Find My Device function to locate your misplaced Android phone, tablet, or smartwatch.
