At Qualcomm’s annual summit today in Hawaii, the company announced the Snapdragon 865 and 765. The company is targeting the advancement in Artificial Intelligence and 5G network with the newly announced SoC’s. And it’s expected that most devices launched next year would have support for 5G. Even mid-rangers would have integrated 5G support thanks to the Snapdragon 765. Before to proceed, you should also get an understanding of the difference between Snapdragon 200, 400, 600, and 800 processors.
Qualcomm has taken an interesting step however since it has launched the flagship Snapdragon 865 SoC without integrated 5G. On the other hand, the Snapdragon 765 which would be found on devices such as the Redmi K30 does have integrated 5G. Thus, manufacturers wouldn’t have to pair the processor with a 5G modem.
What it means for consumers is that we will see a bunch of 5G capable devices in the mid-range segment as well. Of course, Xiaomi and Realme are expected to launch one of the first devices featuring the new chipsets. Here are a few other things you should know about the Snapdragon 865 and 765. Additionally, you can check out the comparison between 4G and 5G networks.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 and 765 availability
As we mentioned above, the Snapdragon 865 does not have integrated 5G support which seems a tad odd since the mid-range chipset does have integrated 5G support. However, Qualcomm is making it mandatory for OEMs to pair the flagship Snapdragon 865 SoC with the X55 modem. It basically means that any device that launches with the new flagship SoC would have 5G support as well thanks to the X55 modem.
The Xiaomi Mi 10 will be one of the first devices to launch with the Snapdragon 865. Previously, Samsung was one of the first OEMs to grab the first lot of flagship SoCs for their Galaxy S series flagship. The mid-range 765 will actually be split in two models. One being the standard Snapdragon 765 while the other will be a gaming-oriented 765G which will feature slightly improved performance. To learn more about SoC or System on a chip, you should read or detailed article explaining everything.
Both the mid-range SoCs would be using the X52 modem to enable 5G connectivity. With the next year just around the corner, we would be seeing a slew of new 5G capable devices being launched. Those looking to grab a new affordable 5G capable phone wouldn’t have to wait long since the launch of the Redmi K30 is taking place next week itself. Of course, the device would be launched in China at first. Knowing Xiaomi, we don’t expect it to launch in other markets until a few more weeks or even months.
A few interesting specifications
The flagship 865 can support ‘Gigapixel’ cameras on phones. And it can also support video recording at 8K, 30fps. However, before getting too excited. We do not expect OEMs to introduce smartphones with gigapixel cameras anytime soon. Moreover, it’s up to the OEM to decide whether or not to enable 8K video recording or not.
Of course, the Snapdragon 730 or 730G aren’t going to feature any mind-blowing specifications. Qualcomm has not yet revealed the exact specifications of the Snapdragon 865 and 765 announced today. We would have to wait a few more days for further information on specifications and how the chipsets fair against their predecessors.
