With manufacturers like Samsung opting for a safer, more Apple-like approach, it’s China where most of today’s smartphone innovations happen. Chinese OEMs are in a race to perfect the bezel-less smartphone design without a notch or cutout. Nubia is one of them and opts for a different approach. Instead of a pop-up or sliding mechanism, Nubia Z20 opts for dual screens. The dual screens are decorated with some great wallpapers too. You can download Nubia Z20 stock wallpapers right here.
Nubia Z20
Nubia isn’t as well-known or trusted as some other Chinese OEMs, but that’s not stopping the company from putting its best put forward.
Design
The Nubia Z20 is built like any other premium smartphone you can buy from other OEMs. It’s a glass on glass design with a metallic rim around it. The device sports a clear front panel that houses a curved-edge display without any notch. At the back, it flaunts another flexible OLED display that blends into the glass build. Above this display is a triple camera set up aligned horizontally with an LED flash on both sides.
The metallic rim houses not one but two fingerprint readers, one on each side. Some people complain about left-hand usability when an OEM chooses to place the fingerprint reader on the right side. Although an obvious answer is to use your index finger, people do complain. And this shows Nubia has been listening. The volume rockers are on the right.
On the bottom is the USB Type-C charging port, a mic, and a single speaker grille.
Specs
The display is a huge 6.42-inches although it’s still not pushing any size boundaries in 2019. It’s an AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 pixels x 2340 pixels with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The pixel density, as a result, comes out close to 401 pixels per inch. This screen supports HDR10.
The secondary screen on the back is also AMOLED, has the resolution of 720 pixels x 1520 pixels and is a smaller 5.1-inch display. Nubia says both the displays are protected with Corning Gorilla Glass but doesn’t specify which one exactly.
The device features Qualcomm’s latest and greatest chipset to date, the Qualcomm SDM855 Snapdragon 855+. There aren’t many phones on the market that can boast of a processor more powerful. The chipset contains the Adreno 60 GPU for graphics processing. The base variant comes with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Options for 8 GB of RAM with 128 GB of storage and 8 GB of RAM with 512 GB of storage are also available.
The device runs Android 9.0 Pie out of the box with Nubia’s custom skin, Nubia UI 7, on top.
Camera
There is no front-facing camera at all, in order to keep the front display notch-less. Instead, Nubia expects you to use the rear camera as the selfie camera, hence the screen on the back. The triple rear camera setup consists of a 48 MP primary sensor with an f/1.7 aperture and 26mm wide-angle lens. It supports PDAF and OIS.
The second is an 8 MP telephoto lens which provides up to 3x optical zoom. There’s a third 16 MP, 12mm ultra-wide-angle lens as well. Other rear camera features include Dual-LED dual-tone flash, HDR, and panorama. The rear cameras are capable of recording video up to 4320p @15fps, 2160p@30/60fps, 1080p@30/60fps, and 720p@1920fps.
