The Nokia 8 Sirocco. A new, classy and exquisite phone with a slightly old, although capable SoC
HMD Global, the parent company of the new Nokia smartphones unveiled the Nokia 8 Sirocco at MWC in Barcelona, Spain on February 25 of this year. The Nokia 8 Sirocco is a refined, modern and sleek upgrade over the Nokia 8 of 2017. The Nokia 8 Sirocco features a curved glass on glass (Corning Gorilla Glass) design with a strong stainless steel mid-frame. Speaking of which, Nokia claims the stainless steel to be 2.5x stronger than 6000 series aluminium. Also, the Nokia 8 Sirocco is a tribute to the good old Nokia 8800 Sirocco of the past decade or so which featured an exquisite and premium sapphire crystal display along with full stainless steel body,
Nokia 8 Sirocco Technical specifications
The Nokia 8 Sirocco features a 5.5in standard 16:9 (thank god) 1440 x 2560 Quad HD p-OLED display that translates to a pixel density of sharp 534 PPI. The display is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 up front. It is a bit disappointingly powered by last year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC coupled with an Adreno 540 GPU along with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Sadly, there is no dedicated MicroSD card slot present in the device. A fingerprint scanner and Nokiaโs iteration of face unlock (most likely) are onboard the Nokia 8 Sirocco.
Photography is handled by a dual camera setup at the rear featuring a 12MP (f/1.75 lens) + 12MP sensor with a 2x telephoto lens having f/2.6 aperture assisted by a dual-LED dual-tone flash and a boring 5MP (f/2.0 lens) shooter up front for the not soย selfieholics. The rear and front cams can record video with a resolution up to 4K @ 30fps and 1080p respectively. A decent enough 3260 mAh battery is onboard the Nokia 8 Sirocco to keep it ticking on and also the device is equipped with Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 via the USB-C port to top it up pretty fast (50% in 30 minutes) in the morning. Speaking of which, the device is equipped with a convenient Qi Wireless Charging feature. Coming to the connectivity side of the Nokia 8 Sirocco, it has you all covered with WI-FI 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0 LE with A2DP, GPS and more. Unfortunately, disappointingly and annoyingly, the Nokia 8 Sirocco abandons the good old headphone jack we all love. The Nokia 8 Sirocco is an Android One device, meaning, it naturally runs on stock and pure Android 8.0 out of the box.
Pricing and colour option
As for pricing, the Nokia 8 Sirocco costs Rs. 49,999 in India and it is available in just one colour: Black.
Design, Nokia got inspired by Samsung of yesteryear
Design-wise, the Nokia 8 Sirocco looks original and much like any other device in the HMD Global smartphone lineup, well, at least at the rear. However, flip the device and upfront you are greeted by a display that is curved at the edges. There is no denying the fact that HMD Global was only and only inspired by the Samsung S7 Edge.
