Having rooted your Note 10.1, you will be able to install aย varietyย of useful apps on your device and the ClockworkMod Recovery will unleash you from the bonds of remaining stuck to the stockย firmwareย forever by letting you choose yourย favoriteย ROM and install it.
Disclaimer:
The following guide is meant only for the four variants of the Galaxy Note 10.1 mentioned above. Do not dare try it with any other device or you might brick it.ย The procedure given below is described below is considered risky. You are advised therefore not to proceed unless you are fully aware what rooting is and if you shouldย root your device or not. Rooting your Galaxy Note 10.1 will void its warranty but you can reclaim it later by installing the stock firmware.

- Finally click theย Startย button and let the Odin do its work.ย
- When the installation is finished, your Galaxy Note 10.1 will reboot automatically.
Now you should have ClockworkMod Recovery installed on your Galaxy Note 10.1. If you do not wish to flash the CF-ROOT package from above and have installed CWM Recovery, you can also root your Note 10.1 by installing theย UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.34.zipย file via CWM recovery.
How to Boot Note 10.1 into Recovery Mode:
Now that CWM Recovery is installed on your device, you must also know how you can boot your Note 10.1 into stock Recovery or CWM Recovery mode. This is how you can do it. Press and hold Volume Down + Power keys simultaneously till the screen turns up and Samsung logo with device model name blinks for two times. Then release the power key but keep the Volume Down key pressed till you see 2 icons. Use Volume down key to navigate between the icons, highlight the left icon and press Volume Up to select it. In the recovery mode use the volume keys to scroll the list or highlight an option and the Power key to select it. In case this method does not work, try Volume Up + Power buttons to boot into recovery mode.
Do not forget to share with us how it went for you and do leave a comment if you have a problem with the procedure. We shall be more than happy to help you out.

I have a Galaxy Note 10.1 N8010 which I have been trying to install the CMW recovery file before installing another OS but whenever I try to install the rooting program via Odin it always fails, the md5 on the CMW file checks out but as the green progress bar gets close to completing it turns RED and then says ‘FAIL’ I have tried various versions of Odin but can’t get pass this stage, please can you help.
The tablet will not boot up on the stock OS, it fets as far as the samsung logo there is the welcome sound, which does not complete and then just hangs at the word SAMSUNG.
Please can somebody suggest what I can do to get past this hurdle.
DEAR RAKESH,
THEY HAVE COMMENTED ON YOU AS FOLLOWS:- ” Well-versed in English literature, Rakesh is a teacher by profession and geek by heart with ardent passion for all-things-tech.”…… I HAVE TO ADD THAT YOU DARN WELL KNOW YOUR STUFF. I AM A 62 YEAR OLD MAN ONLY WITH TWO OR THREE YEARS OF INTEREST IN PHONES, TABLETS AND ALSO SMART TVs AS A HOME OWNER AND CONSUMER. I READ THE ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS TO GET BACK MY TAB GT-N8000 FROM A FAILED ROOTING EXERCISE FROM A VIDEO ON YOUTUBE THAT EVENTUALLY CONFUSED ME AND CAUSED THE TABLET TO NOT RETURN TO WORKING ORDER AFTER THE ROOTING ( ONLY THE SAMSUNG LOGO COMING on AND off AND WON’T RESTART…… But your very clear and professional instuctions saved me after 24 hours on the computer to get it fixed. YOUR INSTRUCTIONS WERE CLEAR AND VERY HELPFUL. I NOW HAVE IT WORKING Thank you Very Very Very Much. YOU ARE A BOSS TO ME. I WAS AFRAID TO Install the
ClockworkMod Recovery on Note 10.1 (All Models)
BECAUSE WHEN I OPENED AND RAN THE DOWNLOAD IT said WARNING: There are things added at the end. Anyhow keep the good works up.
THANK YOU AGAIN!

Thanks for the appreciation, Gregory! ๐
For me, I found that rebooting into recovery required pushing both the power and the volume up button (the farthest to the power button). When the First letters appear, release the power button, not the volume up until entering in recovery mode. Without the second step, my N8013 would cycle repeatedly.
Hello Rakesh this is Greg hey man i Need your help I have the Samsung Galaxy gt-n8013…..love the thred by the way well I did all of above except the clock work mod recovery well here is my problem On start mode it states failed to mount /efs (invalid Argument…..,.like every time I try to boot up it stays on the samsung galaxy note 10.1 and does not come out of this …….After I done what is being asked obove I thought as it started downloding from the odin 3 then it powerd down then rebooted it stayed the same ….also when I push power and vol up it you know how it goes to the android guy it should show me the blue lettering for diffrent task well thats no longer there and it goes right back to the samsung galaxy note 10.1 logo ….before it gave me option to go to factory setting ….well no longer there …….it shows android down the gets out of page and goes back where its stuck at …….I was also reading on your thoughts of efs and what possibly happend you know before this happend it was acting up like not receiving wi-fi and just tring to download apps right after other app I have one like this one but it does not have pin or marker pin ……you are the man on this may help me in what is going on …….Thank you Rakish
any good roms for 8020?
I followed the instructions, but I am not able to get into the recovery mode. If I press the power button with volume down button I get the download mode again. I am using the GT-N8013. I downloaded the correct files: N8000-CWM-Touch-6.0.3.1.tar.md5 and CF-Auto-Root-p4notewifi-p4notewifiue-gtn8013.tar.md5. Could you please help me out?
Thanks.
Try, Volume+Power then. You can also use an app that will boot device in recovery mode without pressing hard keys: http://droidviews.com/2012/how-to-boot-into-recovery-mode-without-touching-hard-keys/
Let me know.
Thanks for the reply. Here’s whats happened so far:
When I first wrote that message, I hadn’t seen the PASS! on Odin, just RESET after the process completed. So I did the whole process again and waited for the tablet to reboot and rebooted it again (as per instructions on an android forum) and finally was able to see the PASS! on Odin. However, pressing VolumeDown+Power still took me into download mode. I even tried VolumeUp+Power to avail.
From that link I installed ROM manager, and as soon as I launched it, it had a dialouge window telling me that I need to set up a recovery (which is confusing since I thought thats what I just did with Odin). Anyway I followed the instructions it provided but my device was not in the list of recommended devices. So it asked whether I installed CWM manually and I said I did, then it asked me for the version with the choices ClockworkMod 2.x and ClockworkMod 3.x+. I didn’t which I had installed but took a risk and went with ClockworkMod 2.x.
Here is the interesting part: I need to press VolumeUp + Power to get it into recovery mode to get the same screen as in screenshot you posted. For me the version says 6.0.3.1 and your screenshot version is 6.0.2.7 which is OK I’m guessing, I just happen to have the latest version.
Questions:
1) When I am in recovery mode, and I press reboot system now, I get “ROM may flash stock recovery on boot. Fix?” and Yes and No as choices. Given that I am planning on installing a custom ROM what should I select?
2) Given the information that I provided could you let me if I am on the right track on installing and enjoying the wonders of a custom ROM and not on my way to bricking my device?
Thanks!
Hi Sudarshan, the version of ODIN may vary as I keep updating the guide as new versions come. When the CWM prompts “”ROM may flash stock recovery on boot. Fix?”, select NO otherwise your device will overwrite CWM with stock recovery and you’ll have go through the procedure again.
Yes, you are on the right track so do not worry about that at all. As for the custom ROM, Omega and Android Revolution are the best if you want a Samsung based ROM.
In case you want a change of taste, CyanogenMod will be a good choice. You can download the latest CM from here: http://get.cm/?device=n8000
and install it using the steps on the Omega ROM post. However, with CM, you will also have to install the Google Apps zip package separately.
http://droidviews.com/2012/download-google-apps-gapps-for-your-android-device-on-gbicsjb/
Hey,
Thanks a lot for your reply. I really appreciate it. Could you elaborate on “Samsung based ROM” ?
Thanks.
I mean the rom based on the official firmware made by Samsung for Note 10.1. Cyanogenmod is based on pure Android found on Nexus devices by Google. On CM, you will not be able to use the S Pen, S Note and anything that you can see on your Note currently. It is a whole new experience. Try it and if you do not like return back to the original. Also read this: http://droidviews.com/2013/things-to-do-before-and-after-installing-a-rom-troubleshooter/
Once again thanks for all your help. For now I think I’ll stick with something that’s samsung based as I use the S Pen alot when I’m reading journal papers on my tablet. Great stuff!
Great decision. ๐
Ah, I made a mistake in a hurry. Actually the option runs like this”- YES โ Disable recovery flashโ’. And the user is supposed to select “YES”. ๐
Hey sorry to bring this up again, but according to this thread at XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2209887 it seems that selecting NO will replace the recovery with the stock one and selecting YES – Disable recovery flash will keep CWM. Isn’t that what we want or am I missing something?
Your way of rooting is the best one I have tried.
Thanks and my compliments.
Thanks for the appreciation! Keep visiting! ๐
Are there any other custom roms for the n8013? Also do you have a link to the stock rom for this device if I need to put this back to stock.
Hi David, here is the Omega ROM for your device: http://droidviews.com/2013/install-omega-rom-on-your-samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-gt-n8000n8010n8013/
As for stock ROM, here is the link to the latest: http://goo.gl/K9jOL
I went to install this rom. When I go into cwmr my tablet doesn’t recognize my 64gb sd card. I can see the sd card when it is connected to my laptop.
I got the sd card problem solved. I am trying to flash the Android Revolution HD Rom. Can’t seem to get very far with the aroma installer. Keeps puking out before I can get anything done?
Sometimes Aroma gets stuck at a certain stage but if you try again and again, you’ll be able to install the ROM. Btw, I have added another ROM too: http://droidviews.com/2013/install-android-revolution-hd-rom-on-omega-rom-on-galaxy-note-10-1-gt-n8000n8010n8013/
I have just updated the CWM an hour ago. Try that: http://d-h.st/VI0
I tried rooting CWM from your previous artical http://droidviews.com/2013/root-samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-gt-n8000-on-android-4-1-2-jb-firmware/ to buckup a karnel and as start to root something smaller before rooting the 4.1.2, I followed your steps but it fails everytime, I change the odin version also fails, I removed the .tat file and download it again, but it also fails, I downloaded this artical cwm file but the odin can’t read it, my device still work normally but it can’t root!?
Well, I already start rooting by CWM recovery to backup the kernal flash and stuff before rooting 4.1.2 from the link in your artical http://droidviews.com/2013/root-samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-gt-n8000-on-android-4-1-2-jb-firmware/ but something went wrong, it doesn’t matter how many times I tried to root the cwm file it fails, I go with the artical page instruction step by stem, even I tried it with another odin (v3) it also fails. I don’t know the reason, when it fail I plug usb out then power it off and start it againe and it works normally but it refuse to flash cwm.
Leave that guide and try this one.
kindly anothe question, do I have to remove authenticator of the gmail account so I can reload it again. and the kernal thing regards to using ICS note N8000, do I have to install anything before rooting cause I read a lot of probs happened to people about flashing and stuff which I’m not really understand.
I found many versions for N8000 in another article, the update not yet in my country so do I need to install this version or any of nearest country. thanks a lot for your patience.
Hi Sarah, this rooting tutorial is for Note 10.1 on JB 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 firmware. Because you have ICS firmware on your device, you are facing the problems. I would recommend you to update the dvice to JB first and then try it.
You’ll find the firmware here: http://droidviews.com/tag/samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-gt-n8000/

Hello, after reading many artical by you I have some questions before start rooting:
I use an original ROM ICS 4.0.4, I can’t copy the efs file, I tried with Galaxy toolbox, system ROM toolbox and All in one toolbox and its required rooted ROM. I only see “efs” file in All in one toolbox app but I only can move it within the sdcard or delete it. so how I can take copy of this file.
Also if there’s any idea how I can backup the original ROM in case that can’t root it smoothly and want to
back to original ROM, or that I can do factory reset and that will include the original ROM.
Do I have to empty space for rooting or the rooting replace original ROM cause I pearly had space in my both storges. and if its need to empty storge, how much at least should be there in both, or I should remove all apps and data and take it back from back up after rooting.
Thanks a lot in advance.
Try this tool to Backup EFS, it requires root too but is better: http://droidviews.com/2013/how-to-backup-and-restore-efs-data-imei-on-samsung-galaxy-devices-did-you-do-it/
How long should my GT-N8010 stay on the “Downloading… Do not turn off target!!” screen? Been sitting idle for 10+ minutes, laptop HD does not appear to be sending any data to the unit.
Do not touch the device. Start the program from Step #5 again.
The last entry in the ODIN message box is “Setup Connection..” still sitting, HD activity light flashed very infrequently.
close the odin window and start the process again.
I did. Same result… the tablet went into downlaod mode just fine, shows the downloading.. screen still. the blue bar unde the Android is full (100% I assume). Did I do something incorrectly?
It is now gone thru NAND write start message, no change on tablet screen though. Should it be this slow?
Once the Odin shows “Pass”, you can disconnect the device and reboot it. The process takes at most 10 minutes.
As for the screen on device, two things are expected; either it will stay the same throughout or it will reboot itself. But none matters.
What matters is the “Pass” message on Odin window, then you can simply disconnect and reboot.
Thanks for your assistance, DB. So far, been sitting on “NAND write start” screen for over 15 minutes

NAND Write Start!!
This is as far as I’ve gotten.
Try this Odin version: http://goo.gl/akk90
New ODIN file in progress, it also stopped at NAND write start.
Are you operating Virtual Machine? Or simple windows?
Windows 7 Home Premium SP 3. Nothing special, Chrome browser.
I have USB debugging checked on the tablet under developer options as well.
This seems to be a very odd issue. The error shows up while flashing which file?
No file name is listed. The device parks at NAND write start.
This is a preproduction unit sent to developers to test prior to release of the Note 10.1 to the public. I don’t see how this could prevent rooting and installation of a ROM. It’s running a “test keys” build.
If it is a developer’s unit then I feel that this might not work on it.
Any suggestions for rooting? I want to install Omega Mod, the multi touch doesn’t work properly.
First, I would like you to confirm that its the developer edition. Is it?
I purchased on Ebay as such. Two enclosed screen shots show kernal and build number, along with verifying the serial number as eleven zeros. You can reply directly to email at kursor727@gmail.com if that would be helpful.
Duplicate photo above, sorry.
First of all, you should update your device to JB and then try rooting it using the method above.
JB?
http://droidviews.com/2013/update-samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-n8010-with-android-4-1-2-jelly-bean-official-firmware/
Two questions. I’m in the US, this device is the international edition. I’m guessing I should choose the UK version? Two other software packages failed to install vi ODIN. Stalled at “NAND write start.” Not confident the JB update will take. It will not update thru Samsung Kies software.
Hmm. I just read your older comments. If the firmware installation fails too, we might be able to find out the reason why you are not able to root the device. Try the UK version. Another thing, make sure you have either Kies or Samsung USB drivers installed on your PC and while you do all this, Kies is closed.
I have KIES installed, it recognizes the device and installed the drivers. My computer detects the tablet just fine, so I don’t think the issue could be there. About to try to upgrade to JB.
Did the same thing with the JB update, ODIN parked at “Nand write start” line and no files were installed on the tablet. Any other suggestions?
Forgot to power tablet into d/l mode, reattempted JB update, made it to “NAND Write Start!” again with same result. There must be something in the developer edition software preventing the tablet to accept the new software. What else?
Hehe..I guessed it would work. Anyways, before we surrender, try different versions of Odin:
http://d-h.st/dFb
http://d-h.st/XaC
Didn’t work. Another site Admin is attempting to help as well. Currently d/l another software packet. He remoted into my computer and tried “Patched Pit” file. That created major problems. Hoping we/he can recover the device.
Patched Pit? That’s is not a solution, I am afraid!
Can it be reversed? Currently d/l the current firmware for the device GT-N8010.
I am not sure as I do not any idea what that admin actually did but you can try wiping data/factory reset from recovery mode.
If your device does not install the software via Odin, how would you install the current (4.0.3) firmware?
It’s all greek to me at the moment. Just hoping we can restore the unit to functional status at this point. It was buggy, gapps kept freezing, and required three+ fingers to enable multi touch, if it would zoom in/out at all.
I have a bricked unit at the moment. It will not advance beyond the “Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1” title screen and will not enter Recovery Mode. It will go into Download Mode. Any thoughts?
I am unable to figure out why someone suggested flashing a PIT when it was not necessary at all. Anyways, your device is only soft-bricked and could be restored by flashing a firmware if it would allow installation.
Try rebooting the device into recovery mode and wipe data/factory reset and cache partition. The method to enter recovery has been given above in the guide.
I cannot get it to boot into Recovery Mode. It will go into Download Mode. Power up button alone brings the title screen, “Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1” and it boots no further towards the home screen. I’m guessing I’ll need to take it to someone who has a RIFF box to flash it back to normal. I’m hopeful the tech can also root and install Omega ROM.
That could be a better solution! Once you are able to flash a normal firmware to the device, rooting and installing firmware can become easier too. I could help you better if I were there but through words, things are different. ๐
I’m hopeful a cell phone repair store in Memphis, TN has the RIFF box. If not, I’ll have to mail to a repair service. I’ll keep you apprised of my progress. I’m not sure if there’s any other way to fix the problems.
Best of luck, Travis!
thx for the Help!
Hi,
The root process went well. However I was unable to boot into CWM recovery mode after the install. Everything appears to have passed. I have root access on the device.
When I hold the power and vol down buttons, I only get the programming screen. There is no indication CWM installed. Any ideas? Thanks for the assistance.
I have described the method with more details. Also read this: http://droidviews.com/2012/how-to-boot-into-recovery-mode-without-touching-hard-keys/
I had my GT-N8020 rooted and cwm installed and decided to return to stock as none of the sync software worked. Now ,no matter what I do I cannot get my 4G or 3G network to work. I reinstalled stock rom and stock recovery but still I only have wifi.
Did you install the correct firmware. If yes, try a “wipe data factory reset” from stock recovery. I once had this issue with my Note 2, and it was fixed this way.
I just rooted my GT-N8010 (Android 4.0.4) according instructions. Everything seems to work fine. Now, I’ve installed CWM Rom manager App. It asks which version of CWM is installed. Can you please tell me which version is installed by using the above package? Thnx in advance.
Hi
You can find it yourself. Boot your device into recovery (method in the tutorial above) and you can see the version on the top of the screen. You can also enter the recovery mode from within the ROM Manager itself too. Open the app and select “Reboot into Recovery”.
I booted my device into recovery mode using the instructions above. Top rows states: Android system recovery . So I guess I have CWM 3.x+ installed. This is what I configured in the Rom Manager App. Now, when I try to make a backup of my current ROM (4.0.4 stock) using ROM Manager, it boots into recovery mode having only the standard 5 options reboot, apply update, wipe, wipe, apply update). But no backup is made…. I’m lost.
In fact, you do not have CWM installed yet. Sorry, I forgot to add the CWM installation steps. The post has been updated. Install CWM and try again. ๐
Thnx, everything works now! As it turns out, it’s CWM V6.0.1.1.
Nice to here that.
does this also work after having upgraded to JB 4.1.2?
Yes, it does. I have rooted my Note 10.1 N8000.
Ok, thnx.
I have a GT-N8010. Will it in any way affect the multiwindow and the S-pen functionality? Because that’s the reason I bought this tab in the first place.
Rooting takes only the warranty (that can be restored later) and gives you a lot. It will not affect any feature of your device.
